Falcons break out with win

The Forest Lake Christian girls volleyball team broke into the win column with a 3-15, 15-12, 3-15, 15-8, 15-11 decision over visiting Del Oro of Loomis Thursday.

FLC (1-2 overall) head coach Travis Smith praised his team’s intensity.

“That has been the one thing we’ve been lacking so far this season. But everyone was in the match tonight. They were up,” Smith said.

Down two games to one, the Lady Falcons, thanks to a stingy defense and big swings by senior outside hitter Brynne Edwards and Leyna Allred, put on their rally caps.

“We wanted this match really badly because we’ve lost the last two matches we’ve played, when we could have won,” Edwards said.

FLC won game four going away, and then set up for the match decider.

The score was tied at 7-7 when FLC took their first lead of the match off a Del Oro hitting error.

Edwards and Allred had a pair of kills each, and Melody Bayless chipped in another as the Lady Falcons were two points away from a win at 13-8.

Bayless notched an ace, and then Allred boomed the match deep as the Lady Falcon bench erupted.

“Del Oro was hitting the ball very hard, especially in the last two games, and I thought we did a great job at keeping (their hits) them up and alive,” Smith said.

Edwards finished with a team-high 11 kills to go along with 51 digs. Allred had nine kills and a team-high 55 digs.

Paulk and Hayley Gowin combined for 88 assists.

Forest Lake plays again this weekend at Oakridge.
