Division IV Boys: Christian Bros. looks for upset at Bear River

Bear River’s boys basketball matchup with Christian Brothers tonight expects to be a tough test for the Bruins, who are the No. 5 seed in the Division IV Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, facing off against a strong No. 12 seed.

Christian Brothers has won five of its last 10 games – not too far off from the Bruins (18-8), who won six of 10 heading into the playoffs. But the difference between the two can be found in the level of competition they’ve played.

The Falcons (15-11) play in the Sierra Valley League, headed up with Division II schools Ponderosa and Cordova, which are also playing tonight in the Division II bracket of the section playoffs.

During the regular season, Bear River plays Division III schools Whitney and Mesa Verde – also playoff contenders.

The Bruins will rely on the philosophy they’ve used since the beginning of the season: a tight defense that has allowed only 50.3 points per game, holding its toughest opponents well off their season averages. They’ll use Patrick Scott (20.1 points per game) and Garrett Barbic (14.4 ppg) to lead the offensive attack.
