DISC GOLF: Memorial tourney honors Derek Sorensen, raises funds for United Way
The Gold Country Disc Golf Association is hosting the fifth annual Derek Sorensen Doubles Memorial Disc Golf Fundraiser Tournament Saturday at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley held in conjunction with the United Way of Nevada County’s Grills & Grilles barbecue competition and car show event.
Derek Sorensen was 26 years old when his loving family lost him.
“He was a best friend to many and a great friend to all,” Sorensen’s mother, Debbie Evans said. “He was not judgmental; never a bully and he loved all living things. He loved all living things; dogs, cats, butterflies, birds, bees and even slugs. Derek was passionate about the Yuba River, loved the mountains, the ocean and most of all the desert and he enjoyed many sports, bowling, hiking, camping, biking, snowboarding and playing disc golf. He is missed by many.”
This one-round disc golf tournament will begin at 9:15 a.m. and end around noon right in time for tasting the BBQ competition. Participants can either pay the entry fee and register the morning of the event or sign-up online at https://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/5th_Annual_Derek_Sorensen_Memorial_2019. To register by phone, call 530-272-4400, and to sign up the day of the event, show up between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. This will be a doubles tournament, so bring a partner. It will be a fun one-round event and a great way to introduce a new player to the sport.
All divisions and skill levels are welcome. Mike Woodman, the organizer of the tournament is hoping to see more Co-ed teams this year. The entry fee is $60 per team. Players will receive a tournament tee shirt and swag bag with other goodies, including $5 worth of BBQ tasting tickets. One hundred percent of the entry fees will donated to benefit the United Way of Nevada County in Derek’s memory. There will be a limited cash payout provided through generous donations from the Sorensen family and other community members. The most important thing is to come out have fun and honor Derek’s memory.
All proceeds of this fun event go toward United Way’s efforts to help assure individuals and families in Nevada County are able to meet their basic needs for food, emergency shelter, and access to health care. More information about United Way can be found at http://www.uwnc.org.
