County amateur ready to tee off

Some of the top golfers in western Nevada County will tee off this weekend in the fourth annual Nevada County Amateur Tournament.

Action begins at noon Saturday on Alta Sierra Country Club’s course, followed by second round competition at 8 a.m. Sunday at DarkHorse Golf Club.

Sixty four golfers had registered to compete through Tuesday, although golfers may enter until Friday evening by contacting tournament director Kacey Tyler at Alta Sierra (273-2010).

“It’s about the same number we’ve had in the past, but things usually start picking up the week of the tournament,” Tyler said. “Last week we only had 30 registered.”

Entry fee is $130 and includes greens fees for both days, as well as a golf cart and a meal following Saturday’s round.

Tyler said 25 of the men entered so far carry a handicap of five or better.

“So we’ve gotten a good response from the good players,” he said. “The tournament will be all flighted, but they all will play the same tees.”

Last year, Ryan Ursiny shot a final round 66 on his home course at DarkHorse to force a playoff with Earl Cross, who finished second in the tournament to Ursiny.

Cathie Krivacic confirmed Wednesday that she will be back on course this weekend as the two-time defending women’s champion.

Golfers with the overall low gross scores are crowned the county champions, no matter which flight they’ve entered. The tournament will also include winners of each flight, with low net scoring.

And the honors won’t end there. Those making the longest drive or the closest shot to the hole will win collectible photos of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, thanks to Andy Geckler of All World Sports Memorabilia.

Geckler, a 12-handicap, will also donate two high dollar collectibles for a hole-in-one contest. The first to ace the contest hole wins an autographed photo collage of Ben Curtis, Jesper Parnivek and Fred Funk – valued at $900, Geckler said.

“I look forward to this event every year,” said Geckler, who is also an independent wholesale jeweler.
