Heroes Relay featured at second Sierra Gold Masters Track and Field Festival

The Heroes Relay is comprised by teams from police and fire departments, search and rescue, and educators. It is planned to be annual event contested each year at the Sierra Gold Masters Track and Field Festival, which is slated for May 20 at Nevada Union High School.

“The winners not only win bragging rights for the year, but will have their names engraved on the victory plaque which will reside with that year’s champions until they are no longer the victors,” said Drue Mathies, president of Sierra Gold.

Field events begin at 11:30 a.m. May 20, with the javelin. At 5 p.m., the 5K will be the first running event.

At 6 p.m., the opening ceremonies will feature Taiko drumming (Taiko Confusion), a welcoming speech by Mayor of Grass Valley Howard Levine, and local masters’ athlete and retired judge, John Darlington will sing the National Anthem.

All track fans are invited to come out and support local heroes and guests from around the world who will be competing, not only for medals, but for the $1,000 prize awarded to any world record performance.
