In years past, Cal-Poly women’s soccer coach Alex Crozier has taken his teams on retreats to South Lake Tahoe and Santa Rosa as a way to get off campus and do some team bonding.

This year Crozier was open to ideas for a trip, and former Nevada Union standout Katie Zealear had one: Why not bring the team up to the foothills for its summer retreat?

Why not, indeed.

Cal-Poly’s soccer team spent the past few days drilling, scrimmaging, and visiting while staying in Grass Valley for their retreat, which concludes less than two weeks before the season’s first tournament.

It is a good chance to get out of San Luis, and we’ve got new players in the program, so it is a chance to be away without distractions and get to know each other, said Crozier after putting his team through a practice Sunday morning.

The team, which includes former Bear River standout Anna LaRash, finished fourth in the Big West Conference last year after winning the league in the previous two seasons.

Zealear, who was a redshirt last year, hopes to recover from a setback to her right knee in time to play for the team by the end of August.

In between eating and soccer, we do team activities, said Zealear. Today we are going to go to Tahoe and float down the Truckee, and yesterday we went to the river. I’m happy to have them here.
