Bruins’ wrestlers win nail-biter

Down 37-26 going into the last two matches of the dual meet at West Campus Thursday, most coaches would be worried.

Bear River head coach Robert Nebeker was not, and rightfully so – his Bruins pulled off the 38-37 win with a forfeit to heavyweight Shawn Belnap and a pin by Glenn Wheeler with less than a second left in the first round.

Wheeler was wrestling up a weight class for the first time this season at 125 pounds because he felt more comfortable there. The coach was dubious beforehand, but Wheeler proved he knew where he should be.

“He really showed me he belongs there,” Nebeker said.

Other winning Bruins were Nolan Gail, who won by technical fall, Brad Sweet, who won 7-2, Brady Lazalier, who got the major decision 13-2, Blake Caravalli, who got a pin in one minute 48 seconds, and Clay Rieson, who pinned his opponent in 1:20. West Campus also forfeited the 130 and 171 weights.

“From top to bottom these kids wrestled tough,” Nebeker said.

With the win, Bear River runs its record to 3-2 in league, 6-5 overall. They are at home Tuesday against Lincoln.

Ponderosa calls off clash at Nevada Union

Nevada Union’s non-league showdown with Ponderosa, scheduled for Thursday was cancelled.

NU athletic director Steve Pilcher said he received a phone call from Ponderosa officials Thursday afternoon, informing him that the Bruins had too many ill or injured wrestlers to make the trip to Grass Valley. Pilcher apologized for any inconvenience the cancellation may have created for Miner fans.
