Bruins topple Grizzlies

Lindsey Berkowitz went 2-for-3 and Michelle Mathis had a team-high two RBIs as the host Bear River softball team rallied to beat Granite Bay 5-4 Tuesday.

The Lady Bruins (17-12 overall, 4-7 Sierra Foothill League) went up 1-0 after one complete, but gave up four in the fifth to trail 4-1.

Tiffany Klopfer scored on a fielder’s choice, and Mathis drove in tow more to tie the score going into the sixth.

Bear River’s defense held, then freshman Candice Wermes sparked the rally with a lead-off single. She moved to second on a Sara Lauer sacrifice bunt, and then to third on a Berkowitz single.

With two outs, Kristen Exline belted a single to score Wermes and take back the lead.

Christina Guerland and Cassie Smith sparkled on the defensive end, according to Lady Bruin head coach Duane Zauner.

Bear River will play at Woodcreek of Roseville 6 p.m. Thursday.
