Bruins top Lincoln

Alyssa Prince tallied a team-high 13 kills and Kate Wellmon chipped in 12 more as the Bear River girls volleyball team won its Pioneer Valley League opener over host Lincoln, 15-13, 15-9, 15-8 Monday.

Wellmon also had seven assists.

The Lady Bruins went up early in game one, but lost their focus as the hosts climbed back into the game.

“We just relaxed. We didn’t push on through in game one,” Bear River head coach Keith Hart said.

Stephanie Martin led the Lady Bruin defense at the net with six blocks. Michelle Mathis had a team-best eight digs.

Candice Wermes finished with nine kills.

Bear River (4-1 overall, 1-0 PVL) will play at Mira Loma of Sacramento 6 p.m. Wednesday.
