Bruins tip off tonight

Bear River coach Jeff Bickmore is trying to forget about Thursday’s escape of a win with tonight’s CIF State Girls Basketball Championships second-round game at 7 tonight against No. 3 Valley Christian.

“I told the girls today, ‘We’re not even going to talk about last night, because with only one day to prepare, we’ve got to start thinking about Valley Christian” Bickmore said Friday.

The No. 2 Bruins (25-7) beat No. 7 Gridley 56-52 Thursday in McCrory Gym. Valley Christian (22-10) also played a close game, beating No. 6 Marin Catholic 57-54.

Bickmore said from the small amount of film of Valley Christian he has watched, he knows Bear River is facing a shorter, faster team.

“They’re real quick and athletic,” Bickmore said. “They’ve got three guards that are not real big, but they’re really fast; they play really good defense.

“They pick up full court and pressure. … They’re just real aggressive.”

The Bruins were able to pick apart the full-court press Gridley used Thursday, but Bickmore said he expects Valley Christian to be far tougher.

The winner of the game will play either No. 5 Ripon or No. 1 St. Patrick/St. Vincent for the Northern California championship March 17 at Delta College in Stockton.
