Bruins third in league

The regular season of wrestling has come to an end for Bear River, but with that end came the excitement of the Pioneer Valley League tournament, which was held at Bear River’s Jack McCrory Gymnasium Thursday.

Four Bruins took first place in their respective weight divisions to lead Bear River to its third-place finish, including Brad Sweet (105 pounds), Glenn Wheeler (127), Josh Jacquier (142), and heavyweight Sean Belnap. All four will move on to sub-sections next week at Escalon High School.

Also advancing from Bear River (the top four from each weight class qualify), are Tyler Frieson, who finished fourth in the 154-pound class, and Clay Reason, who took third at 217.

Oakmont and Lincoln ended the action deadlocked with 193 team points to share the PVL tournament title.

The biggest surprise Thursday was Glenn Wheeler. Wheeler beat the top-seeded, 127-pound wrestler in the PVL out of Colfax, and stayed undefeated at his current weight class. Earlier this season, Wheeler moved out of 119 to wrestle in 127 and has yet to lose.

“These kids worked tremendously hard all year,” said first-year Bruin coach Robert Nebeker said. “It’s just awesome to finish third and be in the position we’re in.”
