Bruins slip in league action

The Bear River boys basketball team fell to .500 in the Pioneer Valley League with a 68-61 loss to host Mira Loma (Sacramento) Thursday.

Bear River, which topped Lincoln in the league opener Tuesday, led by two points after the first quarter, but was outscored 30-17 in the next stanza to trail by 11 points at the break.

“Mira Loma is really aggressive and I think that rattled us. We didn’t take care of the ball and when we got the ball past half court, we hurried our shots and that played right into their hands,” Bruin assistant coach Steve Box said.

The Bruins (7-7 overall, 1-1 PVL) were down, but they clawed their way back into the game thanks to a 15-10 third quarter.

Bear River got within three points with two and a half minutes left, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

“Down the stretch, we just couldn’t make our shots and we gave up some easy baskets. You can’t do that with a team like Mira Loma,” Box added.

Steve Sacher led the way for the Bruins with 18 points, including three 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds.

Keith Marin hit from beyond the arc twice and finished with 16 points in the loss. Gopal Cabrera and Tim Waechter totaled 10 points each.

Bear River travels to Johnson West (Sacramento) for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday.
