Bruins open with win

Although the varsity boys Bear River soccer team beat Sacramento Waldorf 5-0 on Tuesday, the thoughts of Bruin coach Dave Molina were not with the score, but one of his to defenders – sophomore Mike McVey.

McVey lasted the majority of the first half until before his leg was broken in the midst of defending two Sac Waldorf players going for the ball.

Now the Class-1 Placer United team member will be forced to watch the rest of his team’s games from the sidelines, with only his senior season to look forward to.

But with a 5-0 victory, there were still plenty of bright spots.

Kevin Gardiner picked up the hat trick with the first three goals scored of the game, which were followed by Ron Angold’s fourth and Jason Zandona’s fifth off of a Jacob Murnan assist.

Peter Moore picked up half a dozen assists in goal, including several free kicks.

The win is the first of the season for the Bruins after losing their opener 4-1 against Nevada Union last week.

Bear River will meet Marysville Tuesday.
