Bruins open with win, beat Forest Lake in five

Bear River opened the girls volleyball season on an up note with a 10-15, 15-9, 13-15, 15-9, 15-12 win at Forest Lake Christian Tuesday.

The Lady Bruins, who made it to the section playoffs for the first time since 1998 last season, had FLC (0-1 overall) on the ropes early, but couldn’t get the knockout.

“They let up. I’ve got seven seniors and they just don’t know how to push on through yet. When they were up, they couldn’t finish,” Bear River head coach Keith Hart said.

Up two games to one, the 18-time defending Central Valley Christian League champion Lady Falcons had the win in sight when Bear River answered.

The visitors trailed 1-0 early in game four, then on a combination of Lady Falcon unforced errors and the defense of Stephanie Martin and Kate Wellmon, pulled themselves back into the match.

“We wanted this match really bad. I know it’s still in the preseason, but it still counts toward our record,” Bear River junior outside hitter Kristen Lawton said.

Lawton tallied a match-high 15 kills. Lady Bruin teammate Breanna Harris chipped in 10 kills.

FLC’s outside hitting duo of Leyna Allred and Brynne Edwards combined for 22 kills.

Lady Falcon freshman Micah Violet had a team-high nine blocks and six kills.

Bear River will scrimmage at Elk Grove 6:30 p.m. Thursday. FLC will play at Colfax 5 p.m. Friday.
