Bruins look to notch 1st win vs. Union Mine

The Bruins are in unfamiliar territory this week after losing a non-league contest to Pacheco last Friday.

It was Bear River’s first non-league home loss in eight seasons.

But, there’s no better way to shake the stink of a loss than getting back out on the field and taking it to the next opponent.

Slithering into the Bruins path this week is the Union Mine Diamondbacks, who are fresh off a 48-0 thrashing of Pioneer Valley League member Foothill.

The Diamondbacks were a miserable 1-9 last season, but return quarterback Brody Pearman, who started last season as a sophomore. Union Mine also has back their leading tackler from last season’s in middle linebacker Kyle McDonald (75 tackles in 2013).

The Bruins showed glimpses of what they are capable of against Pacheco with senior quarterback Austin Smith hitting on three touchdown passes and junior tailback Kyle Uclaray tallying 84 yards on 11 carries.

Bear River and Union Mine faced off last year in the season opener and the Bruins easily won 26-7. In that game, Bear River went off for 204 yards rushing and four ground scores.

The Bruins are 2-0 all-time against Union Mine.

Friday night is Military Appreciation Night at Bear River and all veterans will be admitted for free.

The Bruins will look to right the ship and earn their first win of the 2014 season at 7:30 p.m. tonight at J. David Ramsey Field.
