Bruins have three advance

The Bear River track and field team will send three to the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section II Finals at the American River College in Sacramento today.

The top six in each event will secure a ticket to the section meet at Modesto Junior College next week.

Today’s field finals begin at 3 p.m.; track finals start at 5 p.m.

In the field preliminaries at ARC Wednesday, senior Briana Thomas took second in the discus and fourth in the shot put to qualify for the finals.

Thomas will be joined by sophomore Chelsea Haverty in today1s long jump prelims.

3We1re thinking Briana1s best chances to make it to sections is in the discus. She1ll probably have to have a personal record to make it for the shot,² said Bear River head coach Scott Savoie.

Chris Kincanon turned in a personal record in the discus with a distance of 1321Z2 feet, but finished out of the top six and didn1t grab a spot in the finals.

On the track, Shawn Lawrence and Nellie Lira-Giammona, will represent the Bruins in the distance events.

Lawrence qualified for both the 1,600, and 3,200 runs with two top six performances in the Sierra Foothill League championships a week ago, but chose to focus on the two-mile crown.

Lira-Giammona came into the week as an alternate in the 1,600-meter run, but took her spot in the finals with the withdrawal of a competitor

3Nellie1s got a legitimate shot right now. Before she ran the 1,600, 3,200 and the mile relay, now she can focus on one thing,² Savoie said.
