Bruins fall to rival Colfax

The Bear River boys basketball team’s nightmare season continued with its 57-36 home-court loss to Pioneer Valley League rival Colfax Friday.

The Bruins, last season’s co-league champions, opened the season with a six-point win over Marysville, but have dropped 16 straight, including five league games.

” We’ve got a very young team. We lost (a bunch of) seniors from last year’s team,” said Bruin junior post Jacob Lazor, who led Bruin scorers with 17 points. ” As a sophomore last year, it really helped to have those seniors because they would talk me through a lot of stuff and clam me down.

“(This year) we’ve only got two seniors, a freshman and the rest are juniors. I’m worried about the younger players who don’t have (that same kind of senior leadership).”

Bruin assistant coach Steve Box echoed Lazor’s comments.

“We knew it was going to be tough this year, losing all of those seniors. It’s really been frustrating for the players and the coaches,” he said. “We’re going to take our lumps this year, but hopefully we’ll learn from it and be a better team next year.”

Colfax (12-6, 4-1), which never trailed, got a game-high 20 points, including five 3-pointers, from Bret Filipowski.

Todd Baumgardner chipped in 10 points for the Falcons.

Bear River’s junior varsity lost 69-41. The Bruin freshman won 47-44.

Bear River’s varsity will play at Oakmont (Roseville) 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
