Bruins fall in tourney

Bear River’s baseball team opened the Spring Tournament at Skyline High School on Monday with a 7-2 loss to Aragon in South San Francisco.

According to, the Bruins jumped out to leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Aragon put up a five-spot in the fourth and added another in the sixth to come away with the win.

Aragon outhit Bear River 9-4. The Bruins committed only one error but wasn’t able to capitalize on Aragon’s three.

The Bruins go back to work today with a noon game against Concord and a 3 p.m. tilt with Hillsdale. All games are in South San Francisco.

Welz competes at Arcadia

Bear River’s Rachel Welz traveled last weekend to Arcadia High School near Pasadena in Southern California.

She competed in the Arcadia Invitational track meet in the long jump and high jump.

Saturday afternoon, Rachel competed in the long jump. Her leap of 16 feet, 9 inches was her second best of the year, having jumped 16-111Ú2 in a dual meet in March.

On Saturday evening in the high jump, Welz cleared 5-6 for second place. First went to Moira Robinson of Mt. Whitney High School, who also cleared 5-6.
