The Bear River boys basketball team kicked off the Pioneer Valley League season on a sour note thanks to a 78-59 loss to host Lincoln Wednesday.

The Bruins (1-13 overall, 0-1 PVL) trailed by nine point at the end of the third quarter, but were outscored 27-17 in the final stanza.

Jacob Lazor led Bruin scorers with 18 points.

Jacob Murnan chipped in a season-high 12 points in the loss.

Dane Foster and Matt Mocek scored eight points each for Bear River.

Wil Thomas finished with seven points.

Lincoln’s Haven Piatt led all scorers with 39 points, including eight 3-pointers.

“We knew coming in (Piatt) had the ability to shoot the ball,” Bruin assistant coach Steve Box said. ” We made it clear to the kids to (not let him have open shots), but he just kept finding his shots.”

In the junior varsity game, Jake Kirby scored a team-high 17 points and Matt Hilton added 11 points in a 59-50 Bear River (7-7, 1-0) win.

The Bruins will host Mira Loma (Sacramento) 7:30 p.m. Friday.
