Bruins beat Mavericks

Bear River pitcher Anthony Welz fought off a 103 degree fever to pitch six innings against Mesa Verde, giving his team an 8-1 win.

Welz, a senior, gave up just one run on three hits with eight strikeouts.

“It was kind of an ugly game,” Bear River coach Mike Viola said. “Their pitcher just couldn’t throw strikes.”

Mesa Verde walked nine and hit seven batters.

Junior Robby Alcombrack was the team’s only multiple hitter going 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored while Ryan Giacomini had a double and 2 RBIs.

At 4 p.m. April 20 the Bruins (8-6, 2-2) host Colfax.
