Bruins awarded All-PVL honors

The Bear River Bruins baseball team, which made it to the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, was honored with six of its players making the first and second all-Pioneer Valley League team.

Vince Viola, the team’s star pitcher and one of its top hitters, was named PVL Most Valuable Player.

Viola, a senior, carried a 0.88 earned run average, winning nine games while taking one loss. He struck out 91 batters and walked only 23 on the season. He also batted .375 and had four home runs on the year to lead the ball club.

His teammates Chad Smith, Stephan Hilton and Brenden Casey joined him on the first team.

Drew Loftus and Kyle Waldmen were both named to the second team.

Hilton led the team in batting average, hitting .392 and a team-leading five doubles. Smith hit .309 on the year while Casey hit .373 with 19 RBIs and one home run.

Loftus led the team with 20 RBIs and Waldman batted .224 in 23 games played.
