Bruin defense pulls through in victory

Gopal Cabrera scored a team-high 11 points and Steve Sacher added nine more as host Bear River topped Golden Sierra (Garden Valley) 47-39 in high school hoops Monday.

The Bruins (2-0 overall) only shot 23 percent from the field, but picked up other parts of their game to pull out the win.

“We didn’t shoot real well, so we had to rely on our defense and it played really well,” Bear River assistant coach Steve Box said.

Sacher, who went 8 for 10 from the free-throw line, had a team-high 14 rebounds.

Brian Harter drained a trio of three-pointers to finish with nine points. Keith Marin totaled six points and five rebounds in the win.

Tim Waechter had four points, two assists and two steals for Bear River.
