Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym changes ownership

Lisa Jeanson, a family nurse practioner by day and kick-boxing mixed martial arts fighter by night, has taken over the Grass Valley Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym on McCourtney Road in a change of ownership to keep the gym going.

“Nathan (Rodriguez), the previous owner came in one day and said he was going to have to close the gym,” Jeanson said over the phone. “Well, there was no other place that I wanted to train so I decided to take over the business.”

The change has given the gym an opportunity to expand, allowing classes for kids, refocusing on mixed martial arts and including judo instruction.

Rodriguez is remaining at the gym as the jiu jitsu instructor, Jeanson said, while Jeremy Hrbek will be teaching judo. She’s also renaming the gym to Powerhouse MMA Training Center.

The gym will have a demonstration at the Nevada County Fair, showing off the different practices by students and instructors.
