The Bear River girls basketball team will try to avoid a repeat of last season’s Division III playoffs when it heads north to Redding to play Enterprise High School in tonight’s NorCal State championship first round showdown.

The Lady Bruins (23-8 overall), who dropped their second straight Sac-Joaquin Section final this year, met up with the very same Enterprise squad in last year’s NorCal first round.

Bear River was in the game for three quarters, but couldn’t hold on, losing 71-55.

“It was really a close game right up until beginning of the fourth quarter. That’s when their point guard just took over the game,” said Lady Bruin junior Amy Pistone.

The fourth-seeded Lady Hornets’ road to the North Section title was not without its share of bumps this season.

After a first-round bye, Enterprise (22-5) slipped by Anderson Union 62-60, then squeaked out a 51-49 win over Oroville in the final for its third straight section crown.

“That’s good and bad. It’s good because it gives us confidence knowing they’re a beatable team. But it’s always good to play a team who has beaten everybody (handily) and is coming in a little overconfident,” Pistone added.

Tip off is 6 p.m.
