The Nevada Union Independent Mountain Bike Team opened its season this past weekend at Folsom Lake.

Headlining the day was varsity racer Matt Wittler, who rode the final 20 percent of the 20-mile course without a tire on his front wheel to take third place. Teammate Kyle Wright finished just behind Wittler in fourth place.

Leading the way for the boys JV team was Dan Freitas, who took fifth, Sean Lane took seventh, Travis Mills finished in 10th, Geoff Hughes took 12th, Tyler Greene came across the line 18th and Philip Marlow finished in 41st. Jason Boutte raced, but did not finish because of a mechanical failure.

Six sophomore boys competed with Justin Boutte finishing in 10th, Ty Zwick 14th, Mikhail Damskey 15th, Ryan Duarte 16th, Cory Andreas 26th and Erick Marlow in 38th place.

Luke Ramseth, from Colfax, took home first-place in the freshman boys division while Vincent Sherman finished third and Brian Talbott came in 36th.

Melissa Waters took third-place in the varsity girls competition while JV racer Sarah Ely, a sophomore, finished in first-place, winning by a considerable margin.

The mountain bike team will compete again March 6 at the Iron Angels Race.
