Wrestling

Last season, the Nevada Union wrestling team sent one guy to the CIF State Wrestling Tournament – heavyweight Wade Sauer.

This year, Sauer will have some company as Luke Manuel (121 pounds) and Drew Maraglia (137) take their shot at the big prize.

Manuel and Maraglia enter after placing fifth in the section tournament. They’ll have a tough road during the tournament that begins Friday in Bakersfield.

Still, just making it there is quite a step for this duo.

“It’s wonderful,” NU head coach Shane Valdez said. “It’s great to see the hard work from these two guys paying off. It shows our team that they, too, can make it.”

Valdez said it sends a message to the wrestlers who won’t be going this year but still have more chances before graduation.

“Most of the rest of our wrestlers have seen Drew and Luke and know where they started,” Valdez said. “They weren’t even close to this level a couple years ago. They’re just like anyone else. They’re not superstars.”

This weekend, however, they can act like superstars. After all, they’re compting with the best.

Girls Basketball

The Forest Lake Christian girls basketball team just keeps rolling. In three playoff games so far this season, the Falcons have outscored their opponents 219-90. Forest Lake will now play in the winner of Tuesday night’s Modesto Christian-Woodland Christian game at Arco Arena at 4 p.m. on Friday for the CIF Sac-Juaquin Section championship.
