Bear River team loses in first round

The Bear River Post 130 Junior American Legion baseball team fell 5-4 in extra innings Friday to Auburn Post 84 in the first round of the district tournament at Bear River High School.

Bear River pitcher Anthony Welz, who gave up seven hits and fanned four for the complete-game loss, got kudos from Bear River head coach Mike Viola.

“He pitched a great game. He put us in a position (to win),” Viola said.

The game was tied 4-4 with two outs in the top of the ninth, when Auburn scored the eventual game-winner on an error.

Bear River’s A.J. Nunez went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Welz and Ryan Giacomini each singled.

Auburn will play El Dorado (Placerville), which moved on in the winner’s bracket of the double elimination tourney with a forfeit over Colfax, 11 a.m. Saturday.

Bear River will play the loser at 2 p.m. The championship game is 11 a.m. Sunday.
