Bear River drops non-league showdown with JFK

The Bear River girls basketball team had its chances in its non-league matchup with two-time defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champ John F. Kennedy (Sacramento), but fell 46-37 Saturday afternoon.

Bear River, the section’s division III runner up the past two seasons, led by five points at the break, but were outscored 22-4 in the third quarter.

“We totally collapsed in the third quarter. We didn’t take care of the ball and they took (full advantage of that),”Lady Bruin head coach Duwaine Ganskie said.

Bear River held Kennedy to a six point fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Lady Bruins’ Meaghan Noud led all scorers with 21 points.

Maya Bryant chipped in six points.

Nicole Scott finished with five points for Bear River.

The Lady Bruins will host Pioneer Valley League rival Colfax 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“We’ve got to bounce back from this and focus on the games that really count,” Ganskie said.
