Back-to-back tests await Nevada Union boys hoops

After a week full of difficult matchups and emotional rivalries, the prep basketball season calms down a tad during this next week ” with the possible exception of the Nevada Union boys basketball team.

The Miners travel to rival Yuba City tonight and then host one the Metro League’s best in Granite Bay Thursday night. The back-to-back games could prove to be a challenge in itself for the Miners.

The Bear River and Forest Lake Christian girls basketball teams will both travel to Center High School this Saturday for the Sacramento Challenge. The Challenge is comprised of 12 teams, playing six single games.

Bear River will take on Bret Harte (Angels Camp) at 4 p.m., with the Falcons playing Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) at 12:30 p.m.

“We have done it the past four years,” Bear River head coach Jeff Bickmore said. “But in the past we didn’t have much competition in league so it was nice to have a good game in the middle of the league schedule. But now that’s not so much the case.

“It’s fun because you don’t know who you’ll play and it doesn’t count toward power ratings so it’s a good game to just work on stuff and prepare for playoffs.”
