Area athletes head to nationals

Bear River graduate Rachel Welz and Nevada Union junior-to-be Cole Stanford earned spots at the Junior Olympics USATF Nationals starting today at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut near Los Angeles.

Welz will also be joined by her 12-year-old sister, Savannah.

Rachel qualified for the national meet in three events after taking second in the high jump (5-foot, 7-inches), first in the javelin (95-feet) and second in the seven-event heptathlon with a score of 4,324 points during the Region 14 meet at Ratcliff Stadium in Fresno.

Stanford triple jumped a personal best of 44-feet, 4-inches in the intermediate boys division to capture the top spot in the region.

Savannah Welz qualified in the midget girls pentathlon by placing second in Fresno. She scored a total of 1,984 points in the five-event competition.

This will be Rachel Welz’s last official event before starting her college career at Sacramento State University in the fall.
