Applegate man earns World title

The 34th Annual Ride and Tie World Championships in Fort Bragg saw Applegate’s own Jim Howard, along with teammate Dennis Rinde of Davenport, win his seventh world title, a record for the event.

The championship took place last weekend and was presented by the Ride and Tie Association, a group dedicated to promoting the pastime of ride and tie.

The sport combines endurance trail running and horse riding, and its goal is to get all three team members (two humans and a horse) across a 20- to 100-mile cross country course in the fastest time.

Each team begins the race as a group, but the rider, being faster, rides ahead and ties the horse to a tree and then continues down the trail on foot. When the person who started on foot reaches the horse, he or she unties, mounts and rides past the original rider and then ties the horse again, creating a leapfrog style of racing.

When, where and how a team exchanges riding for running is almost entirely up to each team.

Other area teams which competed were Robert and Melissa Ribley of Grass Valley with horse Shifty (ninth place), Don Strong and Kurt Miller with horse Zheke (19th), and Cheryl Domnitch of Grass Valley along with Michele Jay-Russell of Sacramento with horse Mocha (27th).

Howard and Rinde’s winning horse was Magic Sirocco.

Teams came from as far away as Canada, Germany and Australia to compete.
