Alumni Notebook: Playoffs around the bend
Here’s a look at how some athletes with local ties fared recently at the college level:
Ali Daley (Nevada Union, ’05); UCLA Ð Daley had 14 kills and 17 digs, but her Bruins lost a heartbreaking match to No. 9 California. The Bruins fall to 16-6 overall and 6-5 in Pac-10 play, while the Golden Bears improve to 17-5 and 7-4 in league action.
Megan Wisniewski (Forest Lake Christian, ’05); University of California, Santa Cruz Ð Wisniewski totaled 11, three blocks and a dig this week against Dominican. Last week, in the Wild West shootout tournament, she had six kills, one block, one dig in a 3-0 win over Concordia University (Wisconsin). She tallied 15 kills and two blocks in a 3-2 loss to Saint Benedict (Minnesota). She had 10 kills, two blocks and a dig in a 3-1 loss to California Lutheran University. Wisniewski’s got one match left in her junior year this Wednesday. Her slugs have lost a four straight.
Andrew Jackson (Nevada Union, ’06); Fresno State Ð Jackson started at right guard for the Bulldogs, as his team took its first loss in the Western Athletic Conference, a 34-21 beating to Boise State.
Sean Johnson (Nevada Union, ’06); Lewis and Clark College – Johnson started for the Pioneers at center in a 39-0 loss to Pacific Lutheran Saturday.
Mike McClain (Nevada Union’06); Yuba College – McClain, playing from his outside linebacker position, had two solo and four assisted tackles against Mendicino College Saturday.
James Brindley (Nevada Union, ’06); Utah State – Brindley led his team in tackles Saturday against Louisiana Tech, tallying 11 in the game. Utah State lost the game, 31-21.
Brennan McFadden (Nevada Union, ’05); Utah State -McFadden subbed in on the offensive line for Utah State in the team’s 31-21 loss to the Louisiana Tech.
Kevin Grimes (Bear River, ’06); The University of Nevada-Reno -Grimes recorded one tackle for the Wolfpack as his team beat Idaho 31-27.
Chris Ulinski (Nevada Union, ‘0?); Utah State – Ulinski recorded a tackle in addition to performing his kicking duties for Utah State against Lousiana Tech.
Leigh Collins (Nevada Union, ’06); Biola University Ð The Eagles lost their season finiale to Cal Baptist, 2-1. Collins played 73 minutes of the match at defender.
Courtney Paquin (Nevada Union, ’05); Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, North Carolina) Ð Paquin’s team closed its regular season against Belmar with a 1-0 win in which Paquin played some as a substitute. Her team moves on to the playoffs next week, hosting Anderson in the tournament of the Carolinas.
Rachel Wittler (Nevada Union, ’07); William Jessup Univ. Ð Jessup lost to Mills College 2-1 this week as Wittler subbed in the game in a reserve role.
