Alpenglow Sports to host trail running demo

With races such as the Western States 100 Endurance Run, Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs, and Tahoe 200, it is safe to say Lake Tahoe is a hotbed for trail running.

Whether a local or visitor, short or long distance runner, all mountain recreation enthusiasts enjoy the endless singletrack that Tahoe has to offer.

However, trail running can be hard on the body and lead to injuries. While not a silver bullet, the right footwear can make a huge difference in keeping the stress down on a runner’s body. Over the last five years, two companies have made major technological strides in this arena.

Both Hoka One One and Altra Running will be on hand as Alpenglow Sports presents a two-part trail running demo Saturday and Sunday. Industry leading brands Hoka One One and Altra Running will join Alpenglow Sports for a unique opportunity to test some of the most popular trail models currently on the market.

Hoka One One will kick the weekend off at 9 a.m. Saturday at Alpenglow Sports in Tahoe City.

Over the last five years, Hoka One One has taken the running community by storm with their maximum cushion running shoes. With a midsole volume two times that of standard running shoes, Hoka is able to achieve superior shock absorption and comfort.

Hoka representatives will be on hand with their most popular trail models, the Stinson 3 ATR, Challenger ATR, and Mafate Speed.

At 9 a.m. Sunday, Altra Running will continue the trail shoe demo in North Lake Tahoe. With their “Zero Drop” technology, Altra Running has also made a massive impact in the trail running world.

The brand argues that by removing the excess heel elevation from traditional running shoes, runners experience a more natural balance that aligns the feet, back and body posture. Know as “Zero Drop,” this technology employs a flat (zero) differential from the heel to the toes of the shoe. The result is a strengthening of the Achilles and lower calf muscles that have been weakened over a lifetime of running on elevated heels.

A secondary technology from Altra, “Footshape Toe Box,” allows the toes to spread out naturally and the big toe to remain in a straight position, effectively giving the foot the working space it needs.

Altra’s most popular models the Lone Peak 2.5 and Olympus will be on hand for participants to try.

While the event is free, a credit card is required to demo shoes. The event is designed for participants to pick-up shoes, take them to their favorite trailhead, and put them to the test. Shoes will be available to demo frrm 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
