Peter Dietz has to play soccer. It’s in his DNA.

“I’m German. It’s in my blood,” he said.

Dietz, 50, got hooked on the sport in the 1970s.

“My step brother played for an ‘A’ League team in San Jose (where) I was the ball boy,” he said.

He tried to organize teams in junior high, then high school, but there was a lack of interest so he put his cleats on the shelf.

“I stopped playing for 20 years. I picked it up again when I was living in Santa Cruz, then (continued) when I moved up here.” he said.

Dietz, who plays in goal, likes both the mental and physical aspects of the game.

“It’s a lot like chess. And it involves a lot of teamwork,” he said. “And it’s a really good workout. It keeps me fit.”
