ADULT SPORTS – Jim Bjork |

Jim Bjork of Lake Wildwood embarked on his first full season of playing in the Gold Country Senior Softball Association this summer as a way to keep busy in retirement.

Bjork, who played linebacker for the Oakland Raiders under then-coach Al Davis in the team’s American Football League days of the early1960s, has found the senior softball league to be every bit as punishing to his body.

“It has taken a while to get used to it,” said Bjork. “I’ve had nagging muscle strains, and pulled ligaments. You just play through it. I’ve had a slight shoulder separation and a little rib injury. Your mind at our age says you can do it, but your body has to be asked first.”

Bjork plays in both the GCSSA’s Thursday and Saturday leagues, and has been remarkably consistent. Bjork was hitting .583 in 10 games for Penn Valley Market, and .587 in the 20 games he had played prior to Thursday’s contests for Pryor Construction. The Saturday league, in which teams play a full nine innings, also practices Tuesday and Thursday mornings, keeping Bjork more than occupied.

“We are getting a lot of softball in,” said Bjork, who plays left field and first base. “I’ve got a lot of time on my hands, and bingo, here I am. This is a serious softball league, and they play to win.”
