When Gene Grapel says soccer in the area is on the rise, he certainly knows of what he speaks.

Grapel, who has had stints coaching at Nevada Union and Bear River high schools, keeps his foot in soccer these days by playing indoor and competitive outdoor, as well as coaching a Class 1 11-under boys soccer team as part of the Gold Country soccer program.

Last year, Grapel?s team, named The Storm, was the only competitive team playing out of Gold Country. According to Grapel, Gold Country is home to five competitive teams this year.

?It is starting to pick up as we get more kids,? Grapel said. ?They just had a whole bunch of under-6, under-8 and under-10 teams sign up, and a bunch more metro teams. They can?t even keep the jerseys in stock for the recreational league.

Grapel plays in a Friday night mens league at the Samba Indoor Soccer facility in Grass Valley, and often will participate in weekend pick-up games at NU and Bear River.

Earlier this summer, Grapel participated on a men?s travelling team that took third place against men?s squads from Vacaville, Chico and Sacramento, teams that had a number of players who had collegiate soccer experience.
