Adult Sports – Duane Strawser

Duane Strawser has nothing against the health club, he’d just rather spend his free time on a bicycle.

Strawser, who owns the Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Shop with wife Connie, likes what cycling has to offer.

“I don’t knock indoor training, because I do that too, but cycling just gives you something a treadmill or the bench press can’t offer,” he said. “It’s being outdoors. (It’s the) speed, it’s the adrenaline rush. We hit 60 mph going down a hill last week.”

Strawser got his start in cycling as a 21-year-old college student. He had just had knee surgery to repair an old high school baseball/football injury and hopped on the bike as a method of rehabilitation.

It must have worked, as he went on to a 12-year career racing road bikes in the pro/am circuit in both the United States and Europe.

“I wasn’t happy with the fact that I wouldn’t be able to play baseball anymore; then I just kind of fell into the whole racing thing,” he said.
