5 Questions With …

Editor’s note: Tom Dever has been involved in Little League for 11 years, including the past four as an organizer for the challenger division which affords disabled children a chance to play baseball. The Union caught up with Dever before the challenger division’s final game of the season Thursday at Pioneer Park.

How did you get started with this?

I’ve been involved with Nevada City Little League for 11 years. A couple of parents approached me about the challenger division for Little League. There was a small group that decided we wanted to move forward, so we formalized the division, which is supported nationally in Little League. There are other teams in the area, so we decided to form a team four years ago.

What’s the best part of helping run the challenger division?

The joy I see and the experience I see these kids are having.

What do you think the kids get most out of this?

They’re out there playing baseball. They’re a part of something in the same way, on the same level, as everyone else playing baseball.

What’s the most valuable thing you get out of the challenger division?

The satisfaction of personal fulfillment and joy. It’s huge for these kids, but I’ve said this a bunch of times before: I believe I’m getting more out of this than these kids are.

How many hours a week do you put into it?

We play on Sundays, so after everything is organized and it’s started, it’s not bad. There is some administrative stuff during the week, but once it’s started it’s … well, it doesn’t matter. It’s worth it.
