5 questions with … Tanner Mathias

The 6-foot, 3-inch quarterback of the Bruins has been waiting for his shot and he’s finally getting it this season as he leads Bear River, High School in his senior year. After a long offseason, in which Mathias poured hours of working in the weight room, coaches are excited about what he can bring to the table. The Union’s Zuri Berry caught up with Mathias this week.

What does it feel like going into this season as the starting quarterback?

It feels good. I’m happy to have good receivers like Garrett (Barbic) and strong linemen to come back from last year. I’m looking forward to it.

What is up with my hearing about your breaking the record for power cleans ? Is this normal for a quarterback to do 330 pounds?

I don’t think that’s normal, but I saw Landon (Savoie) break it when I was a freshman and I was always determined to beat it when I got old enough. I’ve been working for it for four years, and I finally got it.

What are your goals for yourself for this year?

Throw well and keep the team going, I guess. I’d really like to beat Colfax and hopefully get a PVL (Pioneer Valley League) title.

What’s the best part about playing for this team?

The team. I love all the kids on the team, and I feel like a family doing stuff outside of school, during lunch and practice.

How weird is this experience being interviewed?

It’s pretty weird. But I’m hoping to get used to it going forward.
