5 questions with… Forest Lake Christian senior Johnny Umamoto

Johnny Umamoto decided to give the Falcons soccer squad a shot for the first time this fall. In doing so, Umamoto joined a group of young and inexperienced Falcons, but he hopes to help lead the team through an example of hard work. Sports Editor Brian Hamilton caught up with Umamoto after a recent soccer match.

What got you started with soccer?

“This is actually my first year of soccer. I came out to play for Forest Lake and represent the school, and also maybe get into condition for basketball a bit. And hopefully, we’ll get some wins here.”

What’s the strength of this team?

“Our defense is really good. We’ve got a little bit of work to do here and there, but with our goalie and our sweeper, our defense is really good.”

How about some goals for this group?

“Right now, we just have to come together and get to practice. We had a stretch of four straight games without a practice. We just need some practice.”

What do you like about soccer?

“A lot of running. I kind of like that. It makes you more disciplined. You’ve got to get out there and get going, get talking and work on our teamwork and team chemistry.”

Any plans set for after your senior year of high school?

“Actually, I have no idea. I kind of want to go to Southern California, find a good school down there and maybe study sports medicine. But I’m not sure right now.”
