5 questions with … Dave Humphers, Nevada Union’s head football coach
The Miners football team didn’t fare well last season, finishing the year 4-6 while winning only three games on the field. But even after an off Miner year, there’s buzz going around about what Nevada Union’s blue and gold have to offer for this season. The Union’s Sports Writer Zuri Berry caught up with Humphers to get his take on the year and its possibilities.
Through this summer, the workouts and the training camps, how do you feel about this team in preparation for the preseason?
We are very excited about our team. We think this team has a chance to be good. Our guys have been working extremely hard. They’re a group that really likes each other. They’ve been through a lot together this summer. I’m extremely happy with them.
On top of that we have some very excited players. We have some guys that can really excite the community. (Who?) Cameron Ryan, Cole Stanford, Broughan Jantz, Juan Espinoza, Duncan Chapell and others.
There’s a lot of new teams on your schedule and you’ve dropped Del Oro and Granite Bay. Can we ever expect for Grant to make it back on the schedule?
Our schedule is full for this year. We loved our rivalry with Grant. We dominated that rivalry the last four years we played. It was a great, super competitive rivalry and we usually competed for the city championship. I miss playing them. But that doesn’t mean we’re playing them. We’re focusing on playing the teams we have on the schedule now.
How has junior quarterback Broughan Jantz progressed and what is John Wivholm doing?
Broughan has had a great winter, spring and summer. Besides that he grew about four inches in height. He’s a real combination of talent, height, and quick hands. But he’s also very conscientious. I really like coaching him. He’s the quarterback with the shaved head and who’s really gung ho about getting better. I just love that about him.
John Wivholm is playing corner. He’s playing in the secondary. He has had a great summer. Right now, I’ve penciled John in as the starter but we have competition still. Practice will determine where we go forward.
What can fans expect of this year’s team different than other years?
We have some tricks up our sleeve … some new wrinkles in the offense. I think people are going to enjoy it. It’s a team that’s got a good combination of experience and at the same time the juniors coming up from the JV team are a real talented group. The competition for starting positions is really exciting. But what that does is give us real depth.
I know it’s early, but who would you say are the team leaders in the locker room for the Miners?
Broughan Jantz, Cole Stanford, Nick Souza, Jordan Mosbarger, Sam Cartan, Ty Dentinger. This team has developed a mentality and a level of leadership that has really helped. They’ve put a lot of time in already. I would say our summer, besides a lot of hard work, was a lot of fun.
