Editor’s note: Nevada Union’s Sarah Ely rode her mountain bike for the local club team for each of the last four years, helping the team to state championships her sophomore and senior seasons. Now she’s taking her talents to Chico State.

How did you get interested in mountain biking?

I was a road biker. When I got to NU they had a mountain bike team but no road team, so I decided I may as well try it. Then I ended up really liking it. At first, I actually hated it. The bike was heavy and hard to pedal. But then I decided it was so much better than road racing.

How long have you been riding?

Four years.

What was it you got most out of riding on the team?

Wow, so much. I made a lot of new and really good friends. My best friend is on the team. There were a lot of fun experiences and memories and we got to travel a lot. We went to some really nice races across the country. Plus, it was something to do over the weekends.

What other teams do you ride with?

I’m joining the Sierra Express team. I’m not on it yet, but I’d like to be.

Where do you see the future of your mountain bike career going?

I’m going to race collegiately (at Chico State) and see where that takes me. (It’s a club sport at Chico State).
