Matthew Pera

Matthew Pera is the city reporter at The Union, covering Grass Valley and Nevada City. He often reports on issues related to housing, homelessness, cannabis and environment and follows key city government decisions in western Nevada County.

Prior to working at The Union, Matthew was a freelance writer appearing in numerous publications, including Good Times Santa Cruz and The Inertia, and was a staff writer for Manuka Surf. He also worked as a reporter for the city desk at his college newspaper, City on a Hill Press.

Matthew graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in creative writing in 2016. His creative work has been published in literary magazines and journals.

In his spare time, Matthew enjoys surfing in cold water, cooking Southeast Asian and Indian foods, swimming, traveling, hiking, and consuming good books with a side of strong coffee.

A San Rafael native, he currently lives in Nevada City with his girlfriend. When he’s not at his desk or out reporting, you can probably find him at the Yuba.
