Nevada County authorities investigate first homicide of the year
February 8, 2018
Nevada County authorities are investigating the death of a Nevada City woman as a murder after they found her dead inside her home, Sheriff Keith Royal said.
Authorities around 10 a.m. Tuesday found Pamela Diane DeGrio, 67, dead after responding to the 10000 block of North Bloomfield Road. DeGrio had multiple gunshot wounds, Royal said.
Nothing appeared to be missing from the home and there were no signs of forced entry, he added.
"The death has been classified as a homicide," Royal said. "To date, no arrests have been made."
Deputies responded to the home after DeGrio's family contacted authorities, saying it couldn't reach her. Authorities then entered the home and found her body, Royal said.
Authorities believe DeGrio died about two days before they found her deceased, he added.

The sheriff declined to reveal certain details about the case, like what weapon was used or whether any bullets or shell casings were recovered. He said deputies found no weapon at the scene.
An autopsy performed Wednesday determined the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death is homicide, Royal said.
"At this point, we're asking for support from the county," he said.

DeGrio's death is the first homicide to occur this year in Nevada County.
Ken Jaynes, who went to grammar and high school with DeGrio, called her outgoing. He and DeGrio drifted apart after high school, though he remembers how she taught him to ride horses in their youth.
"We were good friends when we were younger," Jaynes said. "We were just pals."
