Writer to discuss the simple life

Tim Holt hasn’t owned a car for 20 years.

So on Sunday, the Mount Shasta-area writer climbed onto his 10-speed bicycle (which he bought used eight years ago) and started pedaling toward Grass Valley, where he’ll give a talk Wednesday about the benefits of a simple, non-consumerist lifestyle.

“I bicycle everywhere, haven’t owned a car for 20 years,” said Holt. He’s going on a bicycle-powered tour of Northern California to promote his latest book, a collection of essays titled “Songs of the Simple Life.”

Holt contends that if you live a low-overhead lifestyle without such things as a car and television, you’ll have more time to figure out who you are and what’s really important.

“If you can get a lot of clutter and the whole consumption thing out of your life, you’re going to have time to discover things that are more fulfilling,” said Holt.

His book praises another famous advocate of a simple, contemplative life: Henry David Thoreau. Holt includes a chapter, “Why I Am Not the Unabomber,” to distance himself from Theodore Kaczynski, another bicycle-riding author.

In 1975, Holt founded the Suttertown News, a Sacramento weekly newspaper. He was editor until it closed in 1993. He sold his Volkswagen Bug to help fund the newspaper and never bought another car.
