‘Woman walks’ …exactly

Clearly this story changed between the original account (“Victim: ‘She shot me,'” Dec. 23) and the recent plea that the woman be released because the shooting was an “accident” (“Woman walks in gun case,” Jan. 27). There was an argument, loaded gun, finger on a trigger and a man life-flighted with a wound to his abdomen.

In domestic violence cases it’s necessary to protect some people from themselves. Did the victim receive the support needed to stand up in court for his rights regarding this attack? Was he manipulated into feeling a need to protect his shooter? Had roles been reversed, would [he have] been allowed to “walk” away? No, we expect men to be punished for violence against women.

Since charges were not filed, there will be no anger management course or therapy ordered. What about the minor children that were living with this couple? Who’s to protect them from a home with an accessible loaded weapon and a parent that would use it?

It seems there was a failure in the system. Hopefully no one else will be injured or worse to prove this point. It’d be a shame if there was another “accident.”
