Whose hard choices?

As I understand it, one of the sticking points of Governor Schwarzenegger’s budget is his plan to take millions of dollars from cities and counties for the next two years and use this money to reduce the state deficit. In return, he wants to give them an amendment to the state constitution which will prevent other governors from doing this in the future.

Mr. Schwarzenegger campaigned on the promises of “open the books – find out where the waste is” – and stated that he would “make the hard choices.”

Since he has been elected, he has gotten a bond issue passed that will be paid for by the next two generations. His current budget plan will require cities and counties to cut services and/or raise taxes and fees. Future governors and legislatures will be put in the same position. In addition, he has hired a larger, more expensive staff than his predecessor. Who is being asked to make the hard choices here?

Finally, in reference to his “girlie men” comment, it may be sexist and homophobic. But most damning of all is how very revealing it is of Mr. Schwarzenegger immaturity, as well as his dismissive attitude toward women.
