Where is school focus?

The cover story in today’s The Union regarding funding concerns for NCTV included some disturbing information. Apparently the Superintendent of Schools has been funding NCTV to the tune of $250,000, although, as the article states, they “cannot afford to subsidize the TV station.”

In a time of huge cutbacks in public school funding, why is so much public education money being funneled into this enterprise? Why did our Superintendent of Schools go forward with this costly venture when no agreement had been reached with Comcast? Superintendent McAteer is quoted as saying, “It is hoped that Comcast will give the station $300,000 a year.” Hoped? Sounds like poor planning and very poor management of our schools’ resources. NCTV has a lot to offer our community, but it shouldn’t be taking money from our schools. I hope The Union will report further on this story.
