What’s in a name?

I found it amusing to read the protest of a local letter-writer at the idea of right-wingers being described as “decent, white, heterosexual, patriotic, God-fearing, Christian conservatives.” Why would such right-wingers complain when others describe them so, unless perhaps those words reflect an uncomfortable air of bigotry and arrogance?

The outraged writer asked how left-wingers would feel if they were branded as “indecent, non-white, homosexual, unpatriotic, atheistic liberals”? My answer would be – consider the source. After all, who else but the kind of decent, God-fearing person described above would use such words, as well as countless others like “un-American, moron, baby-killer, feminazi, coward, vulture, whacko,” ad infinitum, to insult those with whom they disagree?

Let’s face it, when it comes to ugliness, hatred and divisiveness, the radical right wrote the book. Like all bullies, however, they can dish it out but they can’t take it. They cry “foul!” but then go right back to doing what comes naturally – flinging mud.

Shame on these hate-mongers. They should know better. The Union readers deserve a much higher level of discussion among people who disagree on certain issues.
