What gives Bush the right to attack Iraq?

Hitler attacks Poland.

Japan attacks Pearl Harbor.

China attacks Tibet.

Bush’s plan to attack Iraq.

It’s the same story. Each unprovoked. All of them the aggressor. All justified with a theme of nationalism or self-interest. All wanting something, whatever the cost.

Bush’s advertising of his attack on Iraq and the marketing of the idea makes me sick to my stomach. It has the coldness and detachment of some corporate takeover, a strategic business maneuver, and in this particular case, an unconscionable one.

What authority gives Bush the right to do this? The people of Iraq? The Arab world? I hear no screams for help there. It would be delusional to think that eliminating Saddam would make Bush some kind of great liberator. Please. Nothing is further from the truth. This war will be an act of imperialism on a sovereign people. It will stir up a storm of unprecedented hate for this country and its people that will endure for generations. This is not the legacy to leave our children.

Wake up, people. The prevailing wisdom is, if we wish to stop terrorism, we must stop feeding the fuel of hatred.
